Sidewood’s Three Trophies at the 2024 International Cool Climate Wine Show

Sidewood’s Three Trophies at the 2024 International Cool Climate Wine Show

We are  delighted to announce that our Sidewood Estate 2023 Mappinga Chardonnay has taken out the top three awards at the 2024 International Cool Climate Wine Show (ICCWS), winning; Best Wine in ShowBest White Wine in Show and Best Australian Wine last night.

Up against 60 different Chardonnay’s from across the globe, our 2023 Mappinga Chardonnay is described as generously complex with peach, nectarine and grapefruit aromas, which leads to delightful flavours of grilled almonds, finger lime and lychee. Punctuated by a slaty, mineral-driven acidity, the wine is tight and racy with Oak tannins, finishing with a lovely length of palette.

The International Cool Climate Wine Show  competition is renowned for its rigorous judging process, with judges selected from around the world.

“Cool climate wines usually showcase spicy, floral and herbaceous tones, and the wines tend to be more complex and intense, with natural acidity bringing brightness and freshness. The 2023 Mappinga Chardonnay has demonstrated the finesse and characteristics of a cool climate wine, which has enabled it to win multiple awards; collecting three trophies in this show is a rarity, which is a tribute to Sidewood’s wine-making skills,” Paul White, Chairman of the  International Cool Climate Wine Show said.

Grown at Mappinga Road Oakbank, our winemaker Darryl Catlin said that the 2023 Mappinga Chardonnay’s vintage is produced using sustainably grown grapes that are handpicked and chilled for 24 hours before they are partially whole-bunch pressed, and then wild-yeast fermented in 100% French Oak barrels for 10 months. He also said that taking out the top three awards in its first outing is extremely positive for this vintage.

“We put in a lot of effort to create exceptional wines, and it all starts with beautiful fruit. Every step, from grape to glass, is meticulously handled, and I take great pride in this particular wine. This was our first outing of this vintage and the fact that it has been so well received is always exciting,” Catlin said. Owen Inglis, Sidewood Estate Owner & Vigneron agreed.

“Our wines have a strong track record, consistently earning local and global acclaim. This award is a true reflection of our dedication to excellence and quality. It’s a testament to our winemakers and the collaborative efforts of the entire team,” Inglis said.

Three trophies are an impressive feat for Sidewood Estate, but this is not the first time the winery has stood out at the ICCWS. In 2022, a new award: Best Sparkling Wine in Show, was written into the competition for the 2015 Chloe Cuvee Chardonnay, which is the first time a sparkling wine was awarded in the ICCWS’s 23-year history.

The Mappinga Chardonnay has been going from strength to strength for many years, and standout performances over the last three years include: winning Best Wine for its 2021 vintage at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show, Rutherglen Wine Show and National Cool Climate Wine Show, and again for its 2022 vintage, winning gold at the Royal Sydney Wine Show, Winewise Championships and National Cool Climate Wine Show amongst other accolades.
