Sustainability And Our Love Of Craft

At Sidewood Estate, sustainability is at the heart of our values. We understand that preserving the environment and maintaining soil quality is essential for our future. As custodians of the land, we are committed to adapting to climate change and implementing practices that protect our vineyards for generations to come.

As the largest fully Entwine Accredited sustainable winery in the Adelaide Hills, we proudly uphold the rigorous standards set by the Australian Wine Research Institute and Freshcare. Entwine Australia supports the wine industry in enhancing sustainability, and this accreditation reflects our commitment to responsible and forward thinking practices.

We have implemented numerous sustainable and environmentally friendly practices that contribute to the health and vitality of our vineyards and the surrounding ecosystem.

Water usage is also front of mind in our daily winery operations. Our facility can catch and store over a million litres of rain water for use onsite, making us virtually self-sufficient. In addition, all wastewater generated by our winery and bottling facility is treated and recycled onsite, closing the loop on this precious resource.

We are committed to continual refinement of our waste streams to favour reuse and recycling. All grape marc is reused as stock feed, pallets are repurposed, and all cardboard, paper, glass, cans, scrap metal and yeast packaging are recycled.

In our vineyards, we use sheep during Autumn/Winter to maintain pasture and reintroduce organic fertiliser. Traditional use of synthetic, chemical products can be environmentally detrimental, so our viticulture team opts for organic, natural fertilisers to protect our local ecology. Drip irrigation and mulching ensure water use is efficient and carefully managed.

Sidewood nurtures Australian flora and fauna by mulching canopy prunings to nourish our vines, and maintaining pastures to bolster insect biodiversity and improve soil health. We carefully monitor water management, optimising drip irrigation and operations for maximum efficiency.

Solar Energy Project

In 2016, Sidewood transitioned to solar energy. Our winery now boasts a 205-kilowatt solar power system that contributes up to 70% of our winery’s annual consumption. Our eco-conscious energy practices generate over 360 kilowatts alongside existing vineyard power systems, saving approximately 5,000 metric tons of carbon emissions over 15 years.
At Sidewood Estate, sustainability is not just a buzzword; it is a way of life. We are dedicated to nurturing the environment, producing exceptional wines, and preserving the natural beauty of the Adelaide Hills for generations to come
