Tasting Note

Limited release – only 250 cases produced

Small batch fermented and matured in older French barrels to retain regional and clonal expression. Displaying aromas of green tea, fresh rhubarb and macerated cherry. This energetic Pinot Noir has integrated layers of raspberry, sour cherry, leather saddle and savoury spice. Soft delicate tannins and a delicate mid palate deliver a delightful length.

Sidewood is a very clever producer who is not afraid to experiment. There is a lot to like about this wine produced exclusively from the 777 clone of Pinot Noir that is as much about the clone as winemaking technique.

An incredibly light red in the glass, a couple of shades lighter and it’s rose territory; Don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a wine without substance, this is dripping with interest.

The nose enjoys the stem and bracken influence that comes from whole bunch which is shrouded in cherry and earth. The palate has floral tones, but is more in touch with it’s savoury side. Delicate and layered red berry fruits enjoy a weave of spice and suppleness of tannin that is balanced out by structure building acidity. The finish is light on it’s feet initially, but unravels it’s nuances over time as any good Pinot Noir should.

This is savoury and spicy with charming sweet fruit notes; the fabulously lifted bouquet shows dark fruit, charcuterie, olive, earthy mushroom and dried herb notes, followed by a finely textured palate that is concentrated and refined at the same time. Beautifully poised and composed for a graceful development. At its best: now to 2022.

Amazingly beautiful in flavor and glad I managed to get the last bottle of 2017 777 available at the cellar door today. ❤️
