The perfect “Dozen” for Sidewood in 2019 Halliday Wine Companion
Sidewood Estate has cemented itself as one of the most consistent quality producers of wine in the country, but one of only nine Australian wine brands with 12 wines achieving 95 Points or above in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion.
Regarded by most Australian wine lovers as the “Wine Bible,” over 1200 wineries were reviewed in the guide including Penfolds and Hardys.. making Sidewood’s results a ‘David vs Goliath’ feat in the wine world.
Sidewood scored the highest number of 95+ Point wines of all of the 85 Adelaide Hills’ brands tasted and judged.
In addition to these scores, Sidewood has again been awarded 5 Red Stars. The James Halliday Wine Companion 2019 5 Red-Star rating is reserved for the top 11.8% of wine brands in Australia and has been awarded to outstanding wineries regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.
Sidewood’s Owner, Owen Inglis was elated with the rating and scores:
“We have changed our ambition from having a handful of wines in the top echelon of wines in Australia to EVERY wine we make being regarded as exceptional. Being awarded the 5-Red Star ratings in two consecutive years is a reflection of our continual commitment to consistently producing high quality elegant cool climate wines”
“This has been achieved by having control over the entire process; from the finest vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, through to our own winery and even state of the art bottling line. Essentially, this means third parties play no part in our production process and our team are in control of every step……… from “Grape to Glass”
Sidewood continues to dominate the award circuit having won over 14 trophies and 80 gold medals in the last three years. Check out Halliday’s 95+ point reviews of Sidewood below,
Whole berry/ carbonic maceration ferment, matured in French Barriques for 16 months. This hits like a thunderstorm after you have navigated the fragrant bouquet and taken the first sip. Blackberry, red and black cherries and plum flood the fore and mid-palate before the whirlwind of black pepper, spice, liquorice and dark chocolate take command before the fine, persistent tannins on the long finish and aftertaste.
2015 Sidewood Estate Shiraz (SOLD OUT)
Price: SOLD OUT (Click to shop 2016 Sidewood Estate Shiraz)
Has a highly fragrant bouquet, verging on outright perfume; spicy notes are part climate, part whole bunch-derived, and the multi-clone backdrop provides a beautifully poised palate. Very good value.
Shares the striking bouquet of its Estate sibling and follows on the bulkier ’13 which won a trophy at the Decanter Wine Awards (no ’14 was released). It has a spicy/juicy palate with a carpet of red fruits framed by fine-spun tannins. Classy wine.
2017 Sidewood Estate Sauvignon Blanc (SOLD OUT)
Price: SOLD OUT (Click to shop 2018 Sidewood Estate Sauvignon Blanc)
Quite an achievement winning a gold medal in the bastion of sauvignon blanc, the Perth Wine Show. A wine made in the vineyard, with multiple pickings over 2 weeks, row by row, earlier canopy management and fruit dropping reducing the yield. Winemaker Darryl Catlin opted for cool fermentation in tank with 4 months lees contact. Perfectly ripened fruit midway between citrus and tropical are neatly balanced by acidity.
Wild-fermented in French barriques, matured for 10 months. The intensity and length of the fruit is exceptional, and has swallowed up the French oak without even blinking. The accent is slight more on the citrus (grapefruit) side than the stone fruit (nectarine, white peach), the finish as fresh as a spring day. Value++.
2015 Mappinga Chardonnay (SOLD OUT)
Price: SOLD OUT (Click to shop 2016 Mappinga Chardonnay)
An opulent style, very different to its Owen sibling which struck gold at several shows. This has a lively mouthfeel, full of white peach, grapefruit and cashew, the oak handling particularly good.
The best parcels of fruit from the vineyard, whole-bunch pressed, the free-run juice wild-fermented and matured for 10 months in new and used French oak. Three gold medals at the Adelaide Wine Show, NZ and Spain in ’17 is an interesting trifecta. More important is the sheer quality, purity and length of a beautifully crafted (and grown) wine. It hasn’t put a foot wrong at any point along the way, instead conjuring up a combination of crisp acidity and softness.
2015 Owen’s Chardonnay

Offers a complex, gently funky bouquet, very much a la mode. The tangy, juicy palate is very long, drawing on its lively acidity, sustained by a deft touch of French oak.
2016 Owen’s Chardonnay
Price: N/A Wine Club Exclusive
Part whole-bunch, part whole berry wild fermentation, partial malo and maturation for 10 months in new and used French oak all point to attention to detail, and to a total production of 85 dozen. As smooth as silk.
Hand-picked, chilled for 24 hours, destemmed and crushed, 3 hours skin contact, the free-run juice pressed to used French oak for wild fermentation and 8 months maturation on lees. Pale, bright magenta; the fragrant, expressive bouquet puts you on notice that this isn’t your average rose. It is vibrant and crisp, with wild strawberry, crunchy apple skin and cranberries. The palate is dry – very dry – but has excellent texture, mouthfeel and length.
2016 Sidewood Estate Pinot Noir (SOLD OUT)
Price: SOLD OUT (Click to shop 2017 Sidewood Estate Pinot Noir)
The clonal mix (Oberlin, Abel and 777) gives complexity through the bouquet, palate and finish. Notes of plum join the red fruits of its 777 clone sibling. Has excellent line, length and balance, the 30% whole bunch inclusion perfect.
Clone 777, hand-picked, wild yeast open-fermented with 30% whole bunches, 8 months in French oak. The light colour is no indication of the elegance and precision of the palate, nor the highly fragrant cherry blossom bouquet. The long, lingering palate rests on a bed of wild strawberries, the tannins as fine as silk.
