New Release: Another Super Sauvignon for Sidewood
After an outstanding vintage, we’re delighted to announce that the wait is finally over for the hotly anticipated release of our 2018 Sidewood Estate Sauvignon Blanc.
After winning 5 trophies and 17 Gold medals in two years, Sidewood’s Sauvignon Blanc is Australia’s Most Awarded Sauvignon Blanc and continues to sell out every year.
A cool, wet winter and long, dry summer provided near perfect growing conditions for Head Winemaker, Darryl Catlin and allowed his winemaking team to produce what we consider our finest vintage to date,
“A dry and mild summer has provided perfect conditions for grape ripening.
The flavours came out very early at a lower alcohol level than usual this year which has left lots of beautiful natural acids and flavours in the fruit. These flavours are a great indication the team chose the exact right time to get the fruit off the vines.
The SAB blend (on lees) was the best I’ve seen since the exceptional vintages of 2002 or 2010 and I’m certain at this early stage, that the flavours of our 2018 vintage of the varietal will be stronger than 2017 which was an exceptional year and won Sidewood lots of awards”, Darryl said.
Produced from grapes grown entirely at our Mappinga Road vineyard, we cropped at an average of 8 m.t. per ha. Rows were inspected and picked daily over a two-week period ensuring optimum ripeness and flavours.
Picking our Sauvignon Blanc fruit early in the morning and having it crushed and ready for ferment within the hour preserves the fruits natural flavours and aromatics. After chilling at the winery, fruit was gently pressed off and only free run juice used, with a low extraction rate of 70%. Fermentation was in stainless steel tanks for two weeks at 14-15°C which was followed by a further eight weeks of lees work and maturation prior to bottling at our winery.
Drinkers of our new vintage can expect citrus and tropical aromas intertwined with delicate, crisp flavours of lychee, green apple, passionfruit and lemon peel balanced with beautiful mid-palate roundness and a soft, lingering finish. This versatile wine can be enjoyed as a glass on its own or can make a great companion to a wide myriad of foods from seafood and game dishes to spicy Asian cuisine.
A group of hand-selected VIP’s were recently invited up to our Cellar Door at Sidewood at Maximilian’s to sample the new vintage of the varietal which was well received by all who attended. Click here to view the gallery from the event.
After a two-week pre-release period for Wine Club Members, we’re pleased to announce the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc is now available online for purchase.
