98 points from Decanter for 2015 Mappinga Shiraz
The Adelaide Hills continues to prove itself as one the best producers of Shiraz in the country after two wines from the region including Sidewood’s 2015 Mappinga Shiraz were awarded 98 points and an exceptional rating from Decanter Magazines Australian Shiraz Panel Tasting which comprised of Tina Gellie, Roger Jones and Anthony Rose.
Out of the 165 wines entered, the two Adelaide Hills Shiraz’s were the only recipients of the exceptional rating in the category.
Sidewood owner, Owen Inglis spoke about the brands continued commitment to quality when reflecting on the accolade:
Our Mappinga Shiraz continues to get nods from major international competitions and publications due to our core focus on producing only quality wines. Cool climate, soil, careful pruning techniques and hand selection by Sidewood’s Head Winemaker, Darryl Catlin play a vital role in ensuring that only the best fruit is used for our Mappinga Shiraz which we only produce in years where the vineyard can produce outstanding quality fruit.
Deep plum in colour with a vibrant ruby hue, the complex and elegant wine has lifted aromas of rich dark fruits, violets and toasted cinnamon. Its luscious full mid-palate shows blackberries, blackcurrants and fresh dates and hints of liquorice and cocoa bean in the lingering finish.
As the country’s flagship varietal, Australian Shiraz accounts for nearly half of the country’s red wine harvest due to its adaptability to different climates and diversity of styles each region produces.

Roger Jones Review: “A beautiful, savoury nose leads into a palate of gentle, evolving fruit with classy, restrained elegance. It has nice acidity, making this fresh, clean, vibrant and exciting – a real feminine style. Just stunning.”
Roger also selected the 2015 Mappinga Shiraz in his top three wines of the category.
Roger Jones and his wife Sue own Michelin-starred restaurant, The Harrow at Little Bedwyn. His combined talents as a wine critic and chef have seen him set up Restaurant Australia for Wine Australia and The Tri Nations Wine Challenge to promote the wines of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Anthony Rose: “Excellent vibrant, spicy aromatics are followed by an intense and concentrated palate with a rich, dark berry quality. It has a spine of incisive cool-climate acidity and firm, sinewy tannins for structure. Finessed and complete.”
Anthony Rose is a wine critic who contributes to a variety of publications, including Decanter and The World of Fine Wine. He has won a number of awards, among them three Glenfiddich Wine Writer of the Year Awards an Louis Roederer International Columnist of the Year Award. Anthony also selected the 2015 Mappinga Shiraz in his top three wines of the category.
Tina Gellie Review: “Lovely savoury aromas of spiced leather lead into a developing fruit palate of dark berries and sappy, whole-bunch fruit tannins. Refreshing acidity makes it very quaffable. A top-drawer Shiraz that will mature well.”
Tina Gellie is Decanter’s associate editor and has worked for the brand since 2008. An awarded wine writer and editor, she won several scholarships on the way to getting her WSET Diploma. She has more than 15 years-experience in wine publishing, including as acting editor of Wine International. Before her wine career she was a newspaper journalist in London and Australia*.
Sidewood’s 2015 Mappinga Shiraz now has two 98 point ratings and ten gold medals. This is the second international nod for the 2015 Mappinga Shiraz this week with the varietal also winning Gold at the Sommelier Wine Awards in London. Read about the win here.
