behind the wine
Owner & Vigneron
Owen was born in Hong Kong and educated in Australia where he qualified and worked as a Chartered Accountant.
Much of his youth was spent at his Aunt’s horse stud in the Adelaide Hills where he fell in love with the region. In 1983 he moved back to Hong Kong, joining his father in a food and wine importing business and started a successful manufacturing business in China ten years later.
Owen owned race horses in Hong Kong and continued to develop his wine business, becoming a qualified Sommelier. In 2004 he and his wife, Cassandra fulfilled a dream of setting up a vineyard and horse breeding property at Oakbank and successfully continued to surpass that dream and stamp their name on the Australia wine industry.
Owner & Vigneron
Cassandra was born in Perth, Western Australia but has lived in many different countries since she was a young girl.
Her interest in the wine industry originated from her family of wine enthusiasts and she began studying wine at the age of 18. At the age of 22, she owned and managed a very successful wine bar in Santorini, Greece.
In 1994 she moved to Hong Kong, initially worked as a teacher in one of Hong Kong’s prestigious international schools and continued her wine studies to become a qualified Sommelier. Her passion for wine led to the creation of Sidewood wines.
Winemaker & Cidermaker
Darryl Catlin grew up in the Barossa Valley and started his passion for the wine industry as a youngster.
Darryl completed his Bachelor of Wine Science in 2004. Whilst studying his time was spent working for Adelaide’s East End Cellars consolidating his knowledge before managing the independent wine store.
Darryl then landed a cellar hand job at Shaw & Smith in the Adelaide Hills which before long saw him becoming their Chief Winemaker.
Since working for Sidewood, Darryl’s work was awarded ‘Best Red Wine in Australia’ from 2014 International Wine Challenge and ‘Best Dry Style Pear Cider in the World’ at the 2017 World Cider Awards in London. Darryl now makes his own wine label, Catlin Wines and is the Winery Manager for Sidewood Estate creating outstanding award winning wines and ciders.
