Owen was born in Hong Kong and educated in Australia where he qualified and worked as a Chartered Accountant. Much of his youth was spent at his Aunt’s horse stud in the Adelaide Hills where he fell in love with the region . In 1983 he moved back to Hong Kong , joining his father in a food and wine importing business and started a successful manufacturing business in China ten years later . Owen owned race horses in Hong Kong and continued to develop his wine business, becoming a qualified Sommelier . In 2004 he and his wife, Cassandra fulfilled a dream of setting up a vineyard and horse breeding property at Oakbank and has never looked back.
Cassandra was born in Perth, Western Australia but has lived in many different countries since she was a young girl. Her interest in the wine industry originated from her family of wine enthusiasts and she began studying wine at the age of 18. At the age of 22, she owned and managed a very successful wine bar in Santorini, Greece. In 1994 she moved to Hong Kong, initially worked as a teacher in one of Hong Kong’s prestigious international schools and continued her wine studies to become a qualified Sommelier. In 2007 her passion for wine led to the creation of Sidewood wines.
Darryl Catlin grew up in the Barossa Valley and started his passion for the wine industry as youngster. Darryl completed his Bachelor of Wine Science in 2004. Whilst studying Darryl’s time was spent working for Adelaide’s East End Cellars consolidating his knowledge before managing the independent wine store. Darryl then landed a cellar hand job at Shaw & Smith in the Adelaide Hills before long moving into the role of Chief Winemaker. Darryl’s work was awarded ‘Best Red Wine in Australia’ from 2014 International Wine Challenge. Darryl now makes his own wine label Catlin Wines and is the Winery Manager for Sidewood Estate creating outstanding wines and cider.
Natasha studied Oenology at Roseworthy University in Adelaide, South Australia. After graduating in 1992 she spent a year working for Rosemount Estate to learn about Chardonnay with Phillip Shaw. Natasha has travelled overseas working and perfecting vintages in cool climate regions. Natasha also completed a two-year graduate program with Penfold’s wines. In 1997, Natasha became the winemaker and manager at Barossa valley Estate. During the four years that followed, Natasha made premium reds from the Barossa and gained international acclaim. In 2000, Natasha’s E&E Black Pepper was awarded ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ at the IWC show in London. In 2005, Natasha started her own business called Natasha Mooney Wine Architect. She now consults for Sidewood Estate and is viewed in the highest regard as a true expert in her field.
